I started my week off with a slow flow yoga class after taking the summer off. Stepping onto my mat was exactly what I needed! I always question myself as to why I take such a long break sometimes, and by the end of class I’m quickly reminded of how much I benefit from a regular practice, thrown in with my other fitness activities. Yoga not only increases my strength and flexibility but it is truly fitness for my mind!
Dropping our youngest daughter at school for her sophomore year and becoming empty nesters has stirred up a bit of anxiety for me. Sleepless nights and uneasiness are just a few of the things that made me feel I needed to push myself to get back to a regular practice. I was a skeptic for a long time, but after a friend asked me to do a 30-day challenge with her years ago, I was hooked.
For me, exercise has always been a stress reliever and yoga especially gets me to stop, breathe and reset. Increased blood flow and the release of certain enzymes in the body truly does lead to a calmer, more productive state for me. All this being said, yoga has so many benefits including detoxifying our bodies after an indulging time, improving balance and focus, lowering blood sugar, regulating adrenal glands and so much more.
Those who know me best know that I am a worrier, and that can sometimes paralyze me. It is important for me to find things that help me to let go of things, even for just an hour. I am reminded how taking this time for myself relaxes me and allows me to focus better, and to set a purpose that is beneficial to me. Life gets crazy for all of us, but we can all disconnect for a little bit so that we can truly take care of our whole self. To-do lists will still be there after class and the stresses that we had going into class will still be there, but being in a calmer, more aware state can help each of us tackle what’s in store for us in a better manner.
Finding what works to decrease the stress in our lives is so important. Massages, coffee with a friend, taking an artistic class, and keeping a journal can all be beneficial in one way or another. I am planning on my car making its way to The Yoga Studio in Carmel or Broad Ripple several times a week for a slow flow class. Knowing what helps each of us individually is so important! I’ve also learned that fueling my body for the day with healthy things allows me to get the most from exercising and the rest of my day. I always start my day with a big breakfast.
